Exposure settings

Exposure triangle consists of Aperature, Shutter Speed, ISO.
  • Aperature - depends on lense - low f stop means brighter image - higher f stop means darker image - Affect depth of field - example 2 objects with distance between them. low f lense is expensive
  • Shutter speed (Double the frame rate) - Fast shutter will produce darker image - Slower shutter speed will produce brighter image - butalso affects blurriness - Example - fan
  • ISO - Low ISO - dark image, High ISO - brighter image - produces noise grain when ISO is higher

Metering Mode

Metering mode decides how to calculate the exposure (which area to use to calculate exposure)
  • spot
  • evaluative (Matrix)
  • Partial Evaluative

Best Exposure Settings Scenarios

Now let us see best settings for various scenarios.
  • Portrait mode/Macro - low f-stop - shallow depth of field
  • Landscape - high f-stop - max depth of field
  • Sports - faster shutter speed
  • Night mode - Slow shutter speed and low ISO
  • Indoor - When you are taking photographs indoor, you would most probably end up using ISO at 800, shutter speed at 1/60 and Aperture at f/8
  • Outdoor - When you are taking photographs outdoor, you would most probably end up using ISO at 100, shutter speed at 1/30 and Aperture at f/2.8
