Natural rooting hormones to grow plants from cuttings

Several natural substances contain compounds that act as rooting hormones or encourage root development in plants. While the effectiveness of these natural rooting aids may vary, they can be used as alternatives to synthetic rooting hormone products. Here are some examples of natural substances that may contain rooting hormone-like compounds.

  1. Willow (Salix spp.): Willow branches and twigs contain indolebutyric acid (IBA), a natural auxin that promotes root growth. Soaking willow branches in water creates a homemade rooting hormone solution that can be used to water cuttings.

  2. Honey: Honey contains enzymes and natural sugars that can promote root development and help prevent fungal and bacterial infections. Dip the cut end of the cutting in honey before planting.

  3. Aloe Vera Gel: Aloe vera gel has antiseptic and moisturizing properties that can help protect cuttings from infection and reduce stress. Applying a thin layer of aloe vera gel to the cut end of the stem can be beneficial.

  4. Cinnamon Powder: Cinnamon has natural antifungal properties and can be used to protect cuttings from fungal infections. Dusting the cut end of the cutting with cinnamon powder before planting may help.

  5. Potatoes: Some gardeners use potato juice or slices to promote root growth. Potatoes contain natural growth-promoting substances that could potentially aid in rooting.

  6. Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar is believed to contain beneficial enzymes and compounds that might encourage rooting. It can be diluted with water and used as a rooting aid.

  7. Seaweed Extracts: Seaweed extracts are rich in nutrients and hormones that can promote plant growth, including root development. Diluted seaweed extracts can be used as a rooting aid.

  8. Alfalfa Tea: Alfalfa contains natural growth regulators that can stimulate root growth. Soaking cuttings in a solution made from alfalfa pellets can provide these benefits.

  9. Aspirin: Aspirin contains salicylic acid, which has been linked to enhanced root development in some studies. Dissolving aspirin in water and using it as a rooting solution is a practice some gardeners follow.
