why dragon capsule does not sink on splashdown

The SpaceX Dragon capsule does not sink upon splashdown in the ocean due to a combination of design features and buoyant materials. When the Dragon capsule returns to Earth and splashes down in the ocean, it is designed to remain afloat and stable, ensuring the safety of astronauts and the recovery team. Here's how it works:

  1. Design and Materials: The Dragon capsule is constructed with materials that are both strong and buoyant. The spacecraft's outer shell is made from materials that can withstand the forces of reentry, but the interior is designed to remain buoyant. The structure is carefully engineered to keep the capsule floating on the water's surface.

  2. Flotation Devices: The Dragon capsule is equipped with a series of flotation devices, including inflatable airbags, which are deployed upon splashdown. These airbags help stabilize the capsule and keep it upright. They also provide additional buoyancy to ensure that the capsule remains on the surface.

  3. Stability Control: The capsule's design includes systems for maintaining stability in the water. This prevents the capsule from capsizing or rolling over, which could be dangerous for the astronauts on board.

  4. Recovery Operations: SpaceX, in collaboration with NASA and other relevant agencies, conducts recovery operations immediately after splashdown. This includes the deployment of recovery vessels, such as ships and boats, that are equipped with cranes and personnel to recover the capsule and astronauts.

  5. Crew Egress: Once the capsule is recovered, the astronauts can safely egress (exit) the capsule with the assistance of recovery personnel and equipment. The capsule's buoyancy and stability on the water's surface facilitate this process.

Dragon Crew-6 splashdown happened at 12:17 AM ET on 4 September 2023 near Florida coast successfully and recorved by Vessel - Megan. Crew 6 came from ISS after travelling for 17 hours. Crew members that returned were Stephen, Woody, Sultan and Andrey.
