Electron and proton do not have the same mass but they have same magnitude of charge
Electrons and protons do not have the same mass.
Electron
- Mass: The mass of an electron is approximately 9.109 x 10^-31 kilograms (kg). Electrons are much lighter than protons.
- Charge: Electrons have a negative electric charge. The magnitude of the electron's charge is approximately -1.602 x 10^-19 coulombs (C).
Proton
- Mass: The mass of a proton is approximately 1.673 x 10^-27 kg. Protons are much more massive than electrons.
- Charge: Protons have a positive electric charge. The magnitude of the proton's charge is approximately +1.602 x 10^-19 C.
So, while electrons and protons are both subatomic particles found in atoms, they have opposite charges and significantly different masses. This charge difference, with electrons having a negative charge and protons having a positive charge, is what leads to the attractive electric forces that hold electrons and protons together in the atomic nucleus.
